The Mt. Zion United Holy Church is a community based church founded on love and conviviality. It is known for its spirit of worship, prophetic preaching, generosity, faith in the goodness of God and warm Christian love. The church was established during the year 1944 under the leadership of a vibrant Elder Samuel Griffith and affiliated to the United Pentecostal Assemblies. After the departure of Elder Griffith in 1948, the pastoral duties were taken over by Elder Kenneth Harewood. His first major task was to seek a place of worship for this growing congregation. Temporary accommodation was found in a make-shift shed constructed by Mr. John Kirton – a resident of the district. With the assistance of Bishop Harry Gentles, a small building was purchased and used as a place of worship. By 1958, it was replaced by one previously used by Mt. Olive United Holy Church of America.
After providing years of yeoman service, Elder Kenneth Harewood resigned from the U.H.C.A. in 1982. His replacement was the young and vibrant Pastor (now Bishop) St. Clair Howell. This man, with a great vision, saw the need for a more spacious and comfortable church for the ever-increasing congregation. On September 25, 1994, the existing building was dedicated to God’s glory. Mt. Zion continues to grow and prosper, supporting numerous ministries to the membership and the community.
