Mount Hermon

The church, once known as the Cave Hill Pentecostal Church, Granville Way, Cave Hill, St. Michael, was affiliated to the New Testament Church of God, when it was founded in 1936. The leader of the church was Pastor Gabriel Fitzgerald Ward. He became one of the founding fathers of the Barbados District of the United Holy Church of America, having joined the organization when it commenced operations in Barbados in 1949. This church unit features prominently in the history of this organization, in that it served as the venue for the inaugural meeting of the District. The church was renamed Mt. Hermon United Holy Church by the late Bishop Harry T. Gentles.

After the death of Pastor Ward in 1951, Deacon Carmichael was in charge until the appointment of a Pastor Violet Atkins. She served in that post until Elder James A. Hunte was appointed in 1963. Elder Hunte retired in 1986 and Elder Orman Lythcott headed the church from 1986 until December 1989. The incumbent pastor, Bishop Patricia Holder was appointed on February 18, 1990. The objective of Bishop Holder and the members of the Mt. Hermon Church is to preach good tidings unto the meek; … to bind up the brokenhearted; to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound. [Isaiah 61:1]
